A summary of the paper “Apollo’s Cult in the Black Sea Area and the Greek Colonists: Some Remarks”

The Apollo cult was widespread among the Ionians, foremost among them Miletus, as well as in the eastern Greek islands such as Euboea. They believed that Apollo had conquered Scythia. For this reason, from the time of the colonization of the Black Sea coast, which was spearheaded by the Ionians (mid-7th century BC), the colonial cities along the Black Sea coast worshipped Apollo as their guardian deity against the native peoples. Although various epithets were attached to him in each city, it was the same Apollo, and these cities were united under the Apollo cult.
