less than 1 minute read

A book I picked up to cool down a head overheated by an urgent project. But my head only got hotter.

So what is this book about? It solves familiar algorithm problems with all sorts of bizarre, ingenious code. Back before clean code became the trend, writing code that no one else could understand was apparently a kind of badge of pride among developers, and reading this feels like getting a glimpse of that era’s legacy.

I was able to read through the first half with some enjoyment, but by the latter half most of the code was utterly impossible to decipher. The explanations aren’t all that kind either. Having no other choice, I asked an AI, and along with a stern scolding telling me never to use code like this, I received a detailed walkthrough. Scary… AI…!
