I picked up the enormous brick of a book in the hope of finding the roots of all stories. But I’m disappointed. I can see why the Epic of Gilgamesh is so famous. None of the other epics have survived in anything resembling a complete form. Even the Epic of Gilgamesh is full of gaps. Perhaps civilization and stories are far less transmissible than we imagine.
