The Facts and Misconceptions of Object-Orientation
I’m reminded of the time long ago when I first learned programming. I started out with Java, and back then Java’s stature was practically the very embodiment of the object-oriented paradigm. Though it claimed to model the real world, it never quite looked that way, and I, too, sank into the swamp of object-orientation and had to struggle more than most to master it. And now a fairly long time has passed. I’ve become able to hold forth at some length on the subject of program design, yet reading this book opened my eyes once again. The original purpose of programming is to solve problems. Since the problems we must solve are vast and complex, we have to break them into small pieces and simplify them. Object-orientation is one method for doing this, nothing more. It’s time to return to the essence of engineering.
