The Washington Post has done something remarkable. There’s a lot to say, but let me start with a brief summary.

Interviews testifying to the reality of the war in Afghanistan have been made public. The 600 people interviewed over four years, beginning in 2014, by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (CIGAR) were all individuals directly involved in this war. From U.S. generals to diplomats, from enlisted soldiers to laborers, they expose the truth about the war. All this time, the U.S. government has repeatedly assured the public that it was “winning” this war, that “progress was being made,” that it “would never sink into a quagmire like Vietnam,” and that “victory was certain.” It was all lies. From the very start, this war “had no objectives,” no one even knew “who the enemy was,” and nobody knew “where it was headed.” Nearly a trillion dollars was poured into the war and aid. It was a sum vast enough to rival the Marshall Plan. But this money produced nothing but corruption and chaos. No, even the word “corruption” doesn’t do it justice. In Afghanistan, the United States created what was literally a politics of robbery. Afghans turned to the Taliban in search of order and stability. The war has been going on for 18 years. Throughout these long years, the U.S. government has deceived its own people. Democracy Dies in Darkness.
